In a previous blog, we covered what AI image generators are, how they work and how they can be leveraged within your business. Now, we will dive into the best practices when using AI image generators. Additionally, we will give you some tips so you can fully maximise their use.  Creating AI-generated images may sound like an easy task, but it requires a much more elaborate process than some might think. This is because it takes more than just typing random words into the AI image generator. If you want to get the best results, make sure to follow these best practices.

Have a clear idea for your AI image Before you start feeding the AI image generator with your text prompts, you need to have a clear idea of what you want your final image to look like. Choose the topic for your image. Think about what you want the image to represent and while you do so, have these questions in mind: * What do you want to achieve with your image? * Is there a specific feeling you want to convey?* What would the scene look like?* Is the subject in your frame alone or would there be any other objects? The more distinct the image you have in mind, the stronger the foundations for your AI image-generation process will be.

Tip: Carry out a reverse image search on Pinterest or Google to get a better idea of what to include in your prompts. A reverse image search consists of browsing the internet with an image instead of keywords.  In this case, you upload an image into the search engine, click “search”, and you will get valuable information, including: * The different sizes in which the image is displayed across the web* Keywords or possible related searches to the image* A list of links where the image appears online* Visually similar images Pay special attention to the tags in the images, as they can serve as inspiration for your prompts.

Learn the basics of prompt engineering A well-crafted prompt can make the whole difference when it comes to the accuracy and quality of your AI-generated images. So, make sure you take some time to go through the essentials of prompt engineering.  Once you have dominated the basics, the rest of your AI image creation process will become easier and come to you more naturally.

Tips:  Structure Follow the basic structure of a sentence, by including at least a noun, verb and adjective in your image description.

Adjectives  Feel free to include several adjectives in your description, as they will provide the AI image generator with a clearer understanding of what you want to create.

Context  Use a minimum of 3 words to describe your image and give more context. The maximum limit of words allowed will depend on the tool you use. For example, [Narrato](’s AI image generator allows up to 1,000 characters.

Style    If you want your image to resemble a popular artwork or cartoon, just include the phrase “in the style of” in your prompt. For example, you may ask the tool to create “a picture of a student in the style of The Powerpuff Girls”.  Similarly, if you are looking for a specific style, include the name of that particular art style within your prompt - be it cubism, surrealism, impressionism, or any other.

Quality Specify the quality of the image. Do you want it to be of high, medium, or low quality? Do you need it to be 4k or 8k?

Colour palette Are there any particular colours you want your image to have? Include that in your prompt, as well. For instance, “Create an image of a sports car using the colour palette orange”.

Get familiar with graphic design, photography, and art jargon As we mentioned above, the key to obtaining great results in your AI-generated images lies in your wording and the way you craft your prompts. So, why don’t you try getting yourself familiarised with graphic design, photography and art terminology?  Knowing basic jargon from these three fields will enhance your prompts and help you obtain the best possible results. Here are some keyword examples for each field:

Photography jargon * Bokeh* Exposure* White balance* Contrast* Saturation* Vibrance* Hue* Tonal range* Sharpness* Grain/noise* Vignetting

Graphic design jargon * Kerning* Symmetry* Asymmetry* Texture* Layout* White space* Balance* Proportion

Art jargon * Surrealism* Impressionism* Minimalism* Brushstroke* Avant-garde* Contemporary

Tip: Similar to how you can choose the artistic style for your image, you can also specify which artist's work you'd like your image to imitate by using the phrase "in the style of" in your request. What's more, you have the option to combine different art styles by including the names of multiple artists. For example, “woman lying on a lavender field, in the style of Klimt and Van Gogh.”

Repeat your prompt until you are satisfied Because of the machine learning algorithms by which AI image generators are built, they have the ability to constantly learn and improve their accuracy through repeated prompts. If you are not happy with your image after the first attempt, don’t hesitate to give it multiple tries until you get the desired result.  The repeated prompts will guide the AI image generator through your vision, giving it a clear understanding, especially if you are using abstract concepts.

Tip: While it is true you can repeat your prompt to obtain better results, you can also try repeating certain words from your prompt for extra emphasis. For instance, “many many many bats flying in circles”.

Experiment with the AI image generator settings AI image generators present an extensive variety of settings that can support you in the customisation of your images. You can set prompt parameters to adjust the colour, contrast, resolution, art styles, and other factors to meet your image criteria.  Depending on the tool you opt to use, you might find a more varied range of settings. However, don’t be afraid to explore the different options and experiment with multiple combinations.

Refine your images with editing tools Once you are happy with the AI image generator’s final output, you can use photo editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for the last touches. This editing software can give your images a more professional look and help you improve their quality, by adjusting the colours, brightness, contrast and many other aspects. Now that you know what the best practices are, you are equipped to start working with AI image generators and make outstanding content pieces. Don’t forget to apply the aforementioned tips to your content creation process for the best results!
