In previous blog articles, we have delved into what AI image generators are, how they can be leveraged by marketers, and what the best practices are when using them. Now that we have covered what they are and how to maximise their use, it is time to see some examples of AI image generator tools.

With so many AI image generator options available it may be difficult to know exactly where to start and which tool to opt for. That is why we have listed a few examples that we consider the best to start with. We have also included the pros and cons to make your decision easier when choosing an AI image generator.

Midjourney has come a long way since its beginning, as it had limited options and was originally used to create more fantasy scenes. Over subsequent versions, the tool has expanded its repertoire of artistic styles, enhancing the quality of its generated images. Its version 5.1 is currently available and the stunning images it creates have made this tool one of the public’s favourites.

Midjourney has a peculiarity from other AI image generator tools; it can only be used through the social messaging platform, Discord. While this exclusivity offers advantages, it presents certain drawbacks. Initially, the interface might feel unfamiliar, requiring users to execute the '/imagine' command for image generation. However, with use, familiarity with the platform improves.

In public channels, prompts used for image generation are visible to all, offering insights into the model's interpretation and serving as inspirational references. Opting for privacy, users can subscribe to the 'Pro Plan' for $48 monthly, using the '/stealth' command to keep prompts confidential while generating images separately.

However, a notable drawback of Midjourney is the absence of a free version for new users; subscription is now mandatory. The basic plan allows the generation of up to 200 images at $8 per month. Alternatively, a higher-tier plan offers unlimited image generation for $30 monthly, with increased speed proportional to the subscription tier.

To sum up, here are the identified pros and cons associated with Midjourney:

  • Generates high-quality images
  • Strong sense of community from which you can get support and inspiration

  • No free trials available
  • The subscription may seem high if the tool is not used often
  • Accessed only through Discord
  • The generated images are public by default unless you upgrade your plan

DALL-E 2 was one of the first tools to revolutionise the world of AI image generation, renowned for its widespread accessibility and capacity to craft captivating images. Although DALL-E 2 can still be used through its web app and API, the emergence of DALL-E 3 introduced substantial improvements in image quality and consistency.

To get started, you can access DALL-E 3 using ChatGP. This upgraded version of DALL-E positions this AI image generator as one of the most competitive ones. One thing that stands out is the easiness of its use. You simply type your text prompts in ChatGPT and you will get four AI-generated variations of your image. Leveraging GPT's language understanding, each prompt variation yields a distinct image outcome.

While there is no longer a free version for DALL-E, it is accessible to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Alternatively, DALL-E 2 remains an option with 115 credits available for $15. While its capabilities are more basic, it may be worth considering.

DALL-E 2 has attractive features, including its image editor which offers out-painting solutions. This is a technique that allows the expansion of an image beyond the borders of the photo. Additionally, it offers an eraser tool that can remove or replace specific image components with AI-generated elements, known as "in-painting”.

While DALL-E 3 showcases promising potential, it has its limitations:

  • Very easy to use
  • Included with ChatGPT Plus

  • No free trial available
  • $20 per month can be a bit expensive if you are not interested in using ChatGPT

DreamStudio and Stable Diffusion

The developer company, Stability AI, has a suite of image-generation models that is suitable to everyone’s requirements and interests. They have their text-to-image model Stable Diffusion, and the premium imaging tool, DreamStudio.

Although Stable Diffusion is available for free, it demands a robust computing setup due to its open-source nature. This model's adaptability empowers technically proficient users to train and fine-tune it to best suit their needs.

Many AI-powered services use Stable Diffusion to generate artistic portraits, historical portraits, architectural renders and more. Regardless of what your AI project is about, Stable Diffusion is a good alternative if you have developers to adjust the code to your needs.

Similar to DALL-E, Stable Diffusion offers great accuracy and variety in styles. However, it surpasses in providing multiple resolution options and the ability to define predetermined rules for image generation.

Alternatively, Stability AI presents access to Stable Diffusion through the DreamStudio app. Operating on a credit system, DreamStudio offers a streamlined approach for a fee. Upon signup, you receive 25 credits, enough to fulfil up to 30 prompts or 120 images with the default settings.

Additional adjustments, such as modifying the image size or iterating steps, will consume your credits faster. After you have finished your credits, you will need to pay $10 in exchange for 1,000 credits. These are enough to generate 5,000 images approximately under the default settings.

DreamStudio enriches user experience with an array of filters, allowing specification of image size, prompt-image proximity, algorithm version, and an extensive suite of editing tools, including in-painting and out-painting features.

Overall, Stability AI empowers users with extensive customisation and control in the AI image generation process through Stable Diffusion and DreamStudio. For more details, we have listed the advantages and disadvantages of both tools:

Stable Diffusion

  • Free and open-source
  • Code available for developers
  • Higher resolution and more adjustment options

  • Only major AI image generator that still offers free credits
  • Reasonable price
  • Customisable
  • Generates great results

Stable Diffusion

  • Requires technical knowledge to run for free

  • Requires more of a learning curve than other tools
  • Editing tools aren't very intuitive

Adobe Firefly

Adobe launched Firefly at the beginning of 2023, and even though it was a bit late to join the party of AI image generators, it is a tool that has a lot to offer.

Trained on Adobe Stock assets, openly licensed, and public domain content, Firefly's foundation presents certain limitations. Yet, this design ensures its suitability for commercial usage, prioritising safety in its use.

Its user-friendly interface coupled with innovative features positions Firefly as a favorable choice among AI image generators. Notably, its text effects and colour vector models exemplify such distinctive functionalities.

For instance, let’s say you want to include the word “cotton” with lettering resembling the material itself, the text effect feature can help you achieve this from your text prompt.

Adobe has integrated some of Firefly’s capabilities into Photoshop and Adobe Express. Specifically, within Photoshop, users can access the "Generative Fill" option powered by Firefly to infuse AI-generated elements into their images, making it easier and faster to blend different image components.

You can try Adobe Firefly for free on the web and make use of its browser-based tools, but to unveil its full potential and see its integration with other Adobe apps, you must have a subscription.

In essence, Adobe Firefly empowers users to manipulate images and generate diverse variations of their elements swiftly. Below, you will find a breakdown of its advantages and disadvantages:

  • Integration with the rest of the Creative Cloud products
  • Versatile editing capabilities
  • User-friendly interface
  • Offers a free but limited plan

  • Requires an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription for full access

Craiyon, formerly known as "DALL-E mini" inspired by DALL-E, offers a convenient alternative that saves you the hustle of creating an account or buying credits. However, if you opt for the free version, you will have to deal with the ads which can slow down your AI image generation experience.

Either way, Craiyon is easy to use; you visit the website, type your text prompt and your images will be generated. It gives you the opportunity to experiment with different artistic ideas thanks to its diverse styles.

A standout feature of Craiyon is its “next prompt” function, which allows new prompts based on previous inputs. Additionally, users can upload pictures to use as a reference and Craiyon will generate the image accordingly.

Unfortunately, Craiyon does exhibit some limitations. Even though the AI image generation process is quick and easy, the platform offers restricted features and customisation possibilities, but it still sufficiently fulfils its intended purpose. Moreover, the image quality may not be as outstanding as in other tools.

If you require unlimited image generation capabilities, enhanced image privacy, and a seamless experience without ads or watermarks, then you can select a Supporter Plan or Professional Plan. The prices are $5 and $20 respectively.

Just to summarise, here is an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of using Craiyon:

  • Free version available
  • Easy to use
  • Browser-based without having to download any software

  • Limited features and customisation options
  • Ads on the free version
  • The image quality is not as impressive
